WWAY TV: Missions of Mercy holds free dental clinic in Wilmington

Dr. Siena Leone (Wilmington) addresses the need for accessible dental care and explains how the NC Dental Society Missions of Mercy Clinic will serve approximately 700 patients in need.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A number of people in the Cape Fear took advantage of free dental services in Wilmington on Friday, Nov. 3.

Missions of Mercy held a free dental clinic at the First Baptist Church Activities Center. It’s similar to clinics in other North Carolina cities that have been held throughout this year.

Assistant Clinic Lead Siena Leone says the clinic helps alleviate a major challenge for a lot of North Carolinians.

“This is a big problem in North Carolina specifically because we have a lot of people who qualify for Medicaid but no dentist that will really take Medicaid cause the reimbursement rates are so low,” Leone said. “So everyone that we get in here, we’re planning to do over thousands of dollars of free dental care to just kind of help the population with the need.”

The clinic continues on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is first come, first served, and Leone more than 600 people to be aided over the course of the two day clinic.
